KELLOGG: SILVER VALLEY BASECAMP

Where Deep Silver Veins Meet High Alpine Adventure
Mining Roots, Mountain Access

Kellogg sits in the heart of Idaho’s Silver Valley, a historic mining corridor tucked into the Coeur d’Alene Mountains along I-90. Once the center of the Bunker Hill mining and smelting operation, this town was built on hard-rock grit. Today, Kellogg carries that legacy forward while serving as a gateway to year-round adventure, with easy access to some of North Idaho’s most iconic terrain and trail systems.

Ride to the Ridge: Silver Mountain

Silver Mountain is Kellogg’s signature launch point. Its 3.1-mile gondola—the longest single-stage gondola in North America—climbs roughly 3,400 feet from town to the Mountain House, delivering riders straight into the alpine. In winter, it’s all about skiing and snowboarding; in summer, the mountain shifts to lift-served biking and scenic rides. Down below, Silver Mountain Resort rounds out the experience with lodging and Idaho’s largest indoor water park, making it a reliable basecamp in any season.

A Valley Built on Ore and Trails

The Silver Valley stretches east and west through a chain of historic mining towns, with Kellogg anchoring the center. The region’s identity is still tied to silver, lead, zinc, copper, and timber—but today’s explorers come for more than its past. Long-distance bike routes, converted rail grades, hiking trails, and interpretive sites create a landscape where history and recreation run side by side.

Stops Worth the Detour

In town, Kellogg offers several worthwhile stops, including the Shoshone County Mining & Smelting Museum, the Sunshine Miners Memorial, and Crystal Gold Mine. Just up the road, Wallace adds another layer with its preserved downtown, underground mine tours, and deep mining history. From there, two standout rides—the Route of the Hiawatha and the Trail of the Coeur d’Alenes—deliver some of the most memorable rail-to-trail experiences in the Northwest.

Where History Meets the Trailhead

Seen together, Kellogg and the Silver Valley offer a rare blend of living history and outdoor access. It’s the kind of place where you can ride a gondola in the morning, step inside a mine by midday, and still have time to chase a trail into the mountains before sunset.
