Hidden in plain sight
About North Idaho Explorer
North Idaho Explorer is a locally rooted guide to North Idaho’s small towns, outdoor adventures, local businesses, events, and everyday discoveries—the kinds of places and stories that are easy to miss until you slow down and notice them.
I’ve lived in North Idaho for over four decades, and for much of that time, I barely noticed it. It was the backdrop of life—familiar, steady, always there. But somewhere along the way, I realized how much I had missed.
If you’ve lived here for any length of time, you probably have your go-to places too: the coffee shop where they know your order, the stretch of road you could drive without thinking, the trail you return to when you need a reset. There’s comfort in that rhythm, but even in a place we know well, there are layers we haven’t uncovered yet.
A turnoff you’ve passed a dozen times without taking. A locally owned spot with a story behind its doors. A quiet corner of the lake that feels like it belongs just to you. North Idaho has a way of offering something new the moment you slow down enough to notice it.
For years, I loved traveling and discovering new places, yet I had taken my own home for granted. The evergreen mountains, pristine lakes, meandering streams, and open fields that define North Idaho had become so familiar that I stopped seeing them clearly.
North Idaho Explorer began when I decided to change that—to look again, explore more intentionally, and start paying attention to what had been here all along. What started as a personal project grew into a space for sharing hidden trails, small-town stories, local businesses, and the places that shape the heart of this region.
This site is for longtime locals, new residents, and visitors alike. Whether you’re planning a day trip, looking for a quiet trail, searching for a locally loved café, or simply wanting to understand North Idaho more deeply, I hope you’ll find something here that helps you look closer and savor your time in this remarkable place.
Here for the journey,
Carly

Carly Agnew
Publisher, Storyteller,
Curator of Magical Moments

Carly is the voice behind North Idaho Explorer, often with her camera in hand and a running list of places worth circling back to.
She’s especially captivated by the details—the quiet hiking trails, tranquil waters she finds while kayaking, small-town stories, and the moments that make a place feel like somewhere you belong.
Through her writing, she shares not just where to go, but why it matters.
She writes like a trusted guide, inviting others to slow down, look closer, and experience familiar places in new ways.
Mike Cowdrey
Account Executive, Backroad Navigator, River Bum at Heart

Mike is our go-to for all things outdoors—and the guy most likely to suggest taking the long way there.
A former whitewater fishing guide from Eastern Oregon and Alaska, he’s spent years chasing rivers, running trails, and living full-time out of an RV in search of the next great spot.
These days, he channels that same adventurous spirit into discovering new trails, learning the rhythms of local waters, and helping others connect with North Idaho Explorer—always grounded, always authentic, and rooted in the lifestyle.
Jamie Dougall
Graphic Designer, Student of Culture, Historical Adventurer

Jamie blends her background in anthropology and international studies with a deep curiosity for how people live, connect, and make meaning.
She is drawn to researching, writing, and teaching—and enjoys designing immersive experiences that bring ideas, cultures, and stories to life, inviting others to explore and engage with the world around them.
Her curiosity takes her far beyond home, but she believes some of the most meaningful exploration happens when you return with a new perspective.
