BAYVIEW

Tucked along the shores of Scenic Bay on Lake Pend Oreille, Bayview is a captivating waterfront community where rich history, striking natural beauty, and a deep connection to the lake create a place that invites you to slow down and simply take it all in.

BAYVIEW: Life Along Scenic Bay

Kilns, trails, and submarines—stories above and below the waterline
Scenic Bay & Waterfront Life

Nestled into Scenic Bay on the southern edge of Lake Pend Oreille, Bayview is the kind of place that feels both tucked away and deeply connected—to the water, to history, and to the rhythms of North Idaho life. This unincorporated community along State Highway 54 has long been a natural gathering point for boaters and sailors, with marinas and resorts dotting the shoreline and clusters of float homes lending the bay an almost coastal feel.

Historic Lime Kilns

Along one stretch of waterfront, the remains of old lime kilns—stone structures with small, cell-like openings—offer a glimpse into an industrious past. These kilns once supported the Washington Brick and Lime Company, which quarried limestone deposits that were more than 200 feet thick. The operation was significant enough to draw railroad magnate Daniel Chase Corbin to extend a rail line from Spokane to Bayview in the late 1880s–early 1890s via the Spokane Falls & Northern Railway. By the 1930s, the quarries had closed, leaving behind these quiet, weathered markers of another era.

Natural Surroundings & Wildlife

Today, nature has reclaimed much of the spotlight. Steep, rocky cliffs rise dramatically from the water, creating a rugged backdrop where mountain goats, eagles, and other alpine wildlife find their footing, offering excellent opportunities for wildlife viewing in a striking landscape.

Farragut State Park

Just beyond the shoreline, Farragut State Park stretches across approximately 4,000 acres, making it one of Idaho’s largest state parks. It’s a favorite for camping, hiking, mountain biking, disc golf, cross-country skiing, and easy access to the lake.

Naval Research Facility

Beneath the surface of Lake Pend Oreille lies one of Bayview’s most fascinating distinctions. With depths reaching about 1,150 feet, the lake provides ideal conditions for the U.S. Navy’s acoustic research facility, where large-scale submarine models are tested in uniquely quiet waters.

A Place to Notice

Bayview doesn’t demand attention. It invites you to notice—its history etched in stone, its wildlife moving along the ridgelines, and its waters stretching farther and deeper than they first appear.
