I have a confession.

I've lived in North Idaho for over four decades, and for much of that time, I barely noticed it. It was simply the backdrop of life—familiar, steady, always there.

If you've lived in North Idaho for any length of time, you probably have your go-to places too. The coffee shop down the street. The stretch of road you could drive without thinking. The trail you return to when you need a reset. There's comfort in that familiarity—it’s become part of the rhythm of everyday life.

But even in a place we know well, there are layers yet to uncover.

A turnoff you've passed a dozen times without taking. A small, locally owned shop with a story waiting inside. A quiet stretch of lake that, once found, feels like it’s been yours all along.

North Idaho has a way of offering something new the moment you slow down enough to notice.

For as long as I can remember, I've had a passion for travel and touring new places. But growing up in North Idaho was something I took for granted.

The beauty of evergreen mountains, pristine lakes, meandering streams, and open fields somehow seemed ordinary. I am embarrassed to admit that although I've lived here since I as 10, I had hardly explored beyond my own backyard.

And so, the exploration began.

Like Lewis and Clark—and other explorers who once traversed this wilderness—I began taking notes of what I discovered. Not grand expeditions, but small, intentional moments of noticing what had always been here.

North Idaho Explorer was born from these intentions. What began as a way to hold onto moments I didn't want to forget—days on the water, early mornings on the trail, conversations with people who care deeply about this place and the community they're building within it—has grown into something more.

Now, its a space to highlight hidden treasures, local businesses, and stories that might not make the headlines but shape the heart of this region.

It is also a reminder—especially for those of us who have been here a while—that there is still so much to discover.

Not in a faraway, bucket-list kind of way. But right here, in the everyday.
